＜装置、装備＞
　和英辞典で、装置と調べると、a (mechanical) contrivance, a device, an apparatus、systemなどが挙げられています。
　装置という観点からすると、外国から国内へ入ってくる特許出願の明細書にはdevice、apparatusやsystemがよくクレームに見かけられます。
　装備を和英辞典で調べると、equipment, outfit, (軍隊などの装備には)accoutermentなどが挙げられています。これらには、どのようなニュアンスの違いがあるのでしょうか。

＜装置他＞
　Contrivance: 英和辞典によれば、(1)工夫、考案、発明の才　(2)仕掛け、装置、考案品。(3)　たくらみ、計略などです。語源からすると、contrivance は、contrive + anceに分けて考えることができます。Contriveは、発明する、考案する、どうにかして～するなどの意味があります。anceは、接尾辞で、ence, (i)ce,seと同様に、名詞を作る機能があります。
　英英辞典によれば、(1)　something that sb has done or written that does not seem natural (2) a clever or complicated device or tool made for a particular purpose (3) a clever plan or trick. とあります。とりわけ、特定の目的のために製造された複雑な装置、道具について使用できそうです。

　device：deviceの説明は、英和辞典によれば、(1)　装置、仕掛け、からくり。A mechanical device. A device for circulation of water = a device to circulate water. (2)工夫、計画、たくらみ。Let me think out some device to solve the situation. (3) 意匠、図案（design）とあります。英英辞典によれば、(1) an object or a piece of equipment that has been designed to do a particular job, a water-saving device, electrical labour-saving devices, (2) a bomb or weapon that will explode (3) a method of doing sth that produce a particular result or effect. Cf. sending advertising by email is very successful as a marketing device. (4) a plan or trick that is used to get sth that sb wants. です。(1)のan object or a piece of equipment that has been designed to do a particular jobがいわゆる装置に該当します。特定の仕事をするために設計された装備の一部又は対象物等の場合に使用することができます。

　System：　英和辞典によれば、(1)組織、精度、主義、学説。(2)体系、系統、系、網、(組み合わせ式の)装置。装置例：Control system, cooling system (3)方式、方法。(4)順序、規則。(5)人格、体。などがあります。英英辞典によれば、(1) an organized set of ideas or theories or a particular way of doing sth. A new system for assessing personal tax bills (2) a group of things, pieces of equipment, etc. that are connected or work together. Heating system, a streosystem (3) a human or an animal body. (4) the rules or people that control a country or an organization, especially when they seem to be unfair because you can not change them.などがあります。ともに結合又は機能するものの集合、装備の一部などの意味で使えそうです。

　Apparatus：英和辞典によれば、(1)（1組の）器具、装置、(体の)器官、(政治などの)機構。A heating apparatus, an apparatus for washing carsとあります。英英辞典によれば、（１）the tools or other pieces of equipment that are needed for a particular activity or task. (2) the structure of a system or an organization, particularly that of a political party or a government. (3) a system of organs in the body. などがあります。

　ここで、例えば、装置等の訳で良く使われるapparatusとdeviceを比較してみましょう。　　　
　Appratusは、上述の通り、（１）the tools or other pieces of equipment that are needed for a particular activity or task.です。
　一方、deviceは、上述の通り、(1) an object or a piece of equipment that has been designed to do a particular job．です。
　これらを比較すると、まず着目すべきは、apparatusでは、tools or other piecesとなっているのに対して、deviceは、an object or a piece ofとなっています。apparatusでは、
tools or other piecesとなっているので、複数の器具や、複数の部分の集まったもののようにイメージできます。一方、deviceは、基本的に１つを意味しているようです。このような観点から英文明細書に目を向けると、やはりapparatusとdeviceとは、上記のように使い分けられていることが分かります。
　理解しやすいように、例を挙げて説明すると、例えば、複合材料の製造装置があったとします。この製造装置は、可塑化装置と、供給装置と、浸透装置と、分散装置とからなっていたとします。そうすると、この製造装置の装置は、apparatusが適する一方で、この製造装置を構成する個々の部分（一つの部分）である、可塑化装置、供給装置、浸透装置、分散装置などに使われる装置の訳は、deviceが適当であるということになります。皆様も時間がある場合に、英文明細書を読んでみてはいかがでしょう。きっとこのように使い分けてあるはずです。
　これらを総合的にみると、apparatusは、器具や装置など複数で構成されているような装置に使えそうです。deviceは、普通の装置（基本的に1つの部分からなるようなもの）として使えそうです。systemは組み合わせのものが該当しそうです。
　
＜装備他＞
　取り付けるのなかに、equipが出てきましたが、mentとという名詞を表す機能を有する接尾辞をつけると、equip + ment ＝equipment となり、装備、設備、(装置)となります。

＜equipment＞
　 equipment の類義語には、equipmentのほか、material, gear, kit, 　appratusなどがあります。どれも日本語では装備です。微妙なニュアンスの違いは、英英辞典で確認することができます。そのニュアンスの違いが分かり、かつ当該技術を熟知していれば、的確な翻訳をすることができます。equipment, material, gear, kit, appratus は、いずれも、there are all words for the things that you need for a particular purpose or activity. という意味あいをもちますが、以下のように微妙に違いがあります。
equipmentの説明は、equipment is usually solid things, especially large ones．とあります。material の説明には、materials may be liquid, powders, or books, CDs etc. containing information, as well as small solid items.とあります。また、Apparatusの説明は、apparatus is used especially for scientific, medical or technical purposesとあります。gearの説明は、the equipment or clothes needed for a particular activity.とあります。kitの説明は、a set of tools or equipment that you use for a particular purpose. とあります。
　比較的大きく、固体のものなら、equipmentを使い、液体やパウダーなら、material を使い、科学的、医学的、技術的目的のものは、apparatusを使うことになりそうです。

　outfit: outfitは、英和辞典によれば、（ある目的のための）装備一式、見回り品とあります。英英辞典によれば、(1) a set of clothes that you wear together (2) a group of people working together as an organization, business, team etc. (3) a set of equipment that you need for a particular purpose. などがあります。（3）の例として、a bicycle repair outfit. 自転車修理工具セットのような感じでしょうか。セット的なものについて用いるようです。
